Products and Styling (What You Use Changes Everything)
When it comes to curly extensions, products are either going to help your hair last longer… or quietly shorten the life of the hair without you realizing it. Most people think the only problem is product buildup, but buildup is only one side of the story. The other side is using products that are too drying or too harsh. Extensions don’t receive oils from your scalp, so when you use stripping cleansers or drying ingredients, the hair loses softness fast. Dry extension hair creates friction, and friction creates tangling, matting, frizz, and breakage. The goal is balance: clean hair that isn’t coated, and hydrated hair that isn’t heavy.
Why “Extension-Friendly” Products Matter
Extensions are processed hair. That processing can include color work and, for curly extensions, additional treatment to create and hold the curl pattern. Because of that, extension hair reacts stronger to harsh products. If the cuticle gets rough, the hair grabs onto itself easier and tangles faster. If product residue builds up, the hair feels coated, dull, and heavy and tangles faster. Both lead to the same outcome—more detangling, more stress on the install, and a shorter lifespan. This is why you’ll hear me talk so much about clean, balanced formulas and why your routine matters more than the brand hype.
Ingredients to Watch Out For (and why)
There are two ingredient categories that cause the most issues for extensions: ingredients that create coating and buildup, and ingredients that strip and dry the hair out.
Coating ingredients can make extensions feel smooth at first, but over time they can build up and block hydration from absorbing into the hair. That’s when you start feeling that “waxy,” “sticky,” “heavy,” or “product just sits on top” sensation. On the other side, harsh cleansing agents and drying alcohols can strip extension hair too aggressively, leaving it brittle, frizzy, and rough. Rough hair tangles easier, breaks easier, and requires more force to detangle—which then stresses the attachment points.
In simple terms: if your hair is coated, it tangles. If your hair is stripped and dry, it tangles. We want neither. The right products keep the hair clean, soft, and hydrated without heaviness.
My Shampoo + Conditioner Recommendations (the goal: clean + hydrated, not coated)
For extension care, I look for formulas that cleanse gently, rinse clean, and keep the hair hydrated without creating buildup. That’s why I recommend Malibu C and Innersense as go-to systems depending on what your hair needs.
Malibu C is one of my favorites for extension wearers because it’s designed to help remove mineral and product buildup without being harsh, which is especially important if you live in hard water or notice your extensions feeling dull or coated. Malibu C’s Wefts & Extensions Wellness Collection is made specifically to maintain wefts, extensions, and even wigs by lifting dulling buildup and keeping the hair manageable. The Wellness Hair Remedy is a vitamin C–activated treatment that helps dissolve mineral and product deposits and supports softness and movement. It’s a great option for prep and for maintenance when you need a true reset without compromising extension integrity. After any detox or clarifying step, hydration is key—this is why following with a deep conditioning mask matters.
Innersense is my go-to for daily/regular cleansing and conditioning because it’s clean, concentrated, and supports scalp and hair health without relying on heavy coating ingredients. If you have color-treated hair or want a gentle system that helps preserve vibrancy, the Color Awakening line is a great choice for many extension clients. If your hair is naturally thirstier, coarser, or you feel like your extensions dry out quickly, the Hydrating Cream line is a strong option because it supports softness and moisture. The key with Innersense is technique: the Hairbaths are concentrated, so you want to emulsify them with water in your hands first—this helps them spread evenly and cleanse without overusing product.
Styling Products: Hydration and Hold Without the Damage
Styling curly extensions is all about creating curl clumps, reducing friction, and keeping the hair hydrated so it doesn’t tangle. Because extensions don’t receive natural oils, leave-in conditioner is one of the most important products in your routine. It helps keep the hair soft, reduces friction, and makes detangling safer. A leave-in that I love for extension wearers is Innersense Sweet Spirit Leave-In Conditioner because it adds slip and hydration without making the hair feel heavy.
Your styling routine should support curl definition without creating thick coating. Heavy product layering can feel great on day one, but on extensions it can create buildup faster and lead to tangling at the base over time. The goal is enough hydration and hold to keep curls defined, but not so much product that it builds up quickly.
If you want my full step-by-step curly routine—product layering, water-to-product ratios, curl clumping techniques, refreshing, and all the details—this is where my Curl Guide comes in.

That guide walks you through how to apply products in the correct order, how to “squish” for hydration and curl definition, and how to refresh without drying your extension hair out or soaking attachment points.
Heat + Styling Tools (a quick note before the next section)
Even the best products can’t protect extensions if heat is too high or used too often. Extension hair is processed and more sensitive to heat, and high heat can loosen the curl pattern and cause irreversible damage. Always use heat protectant and keep temperatures low. The next section covers drying and sleeping because those two steps can either protect your curls and extensions—or create friction and matting fast.
