REFRESHING CURLY HAIR
Bring your curls back to life without starting over * Refreshing is not restyling — it’s resetting with intention.
The goal of refreshing is to:
Rehydrate curls * Reform curl clumps * Reduce frizz * Extend time between wash days
Some people refresh daily. Others go a full week between washes. Both are valid.
WATER COMES FIRST — ALWAYS
Water is the most important part of refreshing.
Refreshing dry curls without water almost always leads to frizz.
That’s why water-soluble products matter — they reactivate when wet, allowing curls to move and reform instead of resisting.
If something isn’t working: add water first. Every time.
WHEN TO ADD PRODUCT
I personally don’t add product until day 3 or 4, and I often go a week (or longer) between wash days.
-
Day 1–2:
-
Water only or light mist
-
-
Day 3–4+:
-
Water + foam or spray
-
Very light product support
-
Foams and sprays are my favorite refreshing products because they’re lightweight and easy to distribute.
REFRESHING TECHNIQUES
Start by lightly wetting the hair.
Then:
-
Squish and pulsate curls to reform clumps
-
Tap curls into place where needed
-
Avoid praying hands — they tend to disrupt curl formation
You can absolutely refresh curl by curl, especially around the face or crown.
Diffusing is optional, but many people notice curls actually become curlier after day one when refreshed.
GEL & CREAM DURING REFRESHING
-
Creams and gels work best on soaking wet hair
-
Heavy products can cause buildup when used on dry hair
One exception I’ve had success with:
-
Mix a water-soluble gel into a spray bottle
-
Ratio: 1 part gel : 15 parts water
-
Shake until fully dissolved
This creates a lightweight mist with a touch of hold.
DAY-BY-DAY CURL EXPECTATIONS
Curls change throughout the week — this is normal.
-
Day 1: Structured, defined
-
Day 2: Softer, lived-in
-
Day 3–4: Volume increases, refresh helps
-
Day 5–7: More personality, more texture
Some people prefer this look. Others reset sooner.
Neither is wrong.
FULL RESET VS. REFRESH
Some people choose to co-wash or fully reset with water and product instead of shampoo.
That’s a personal preference — but if you’re fully rewetting and restyling, you may find it just makes sense to wash instead.
Listen to your hair.
LET’S TALK ABOUT FRIZZ
Frizz isn’t always the enemy.
Workable Frizz
(Functional Frizz)
-
Natural halo or flyaways
-
Adds volume and movement
-
Manageable and flexible
Uncontrolled Frizz
-
Hair appears dry, puffy, or misaligned
-
Often linked to damage or dehydration
-
Requires deeper care and hydration
Humidity Frizz
-
Triggered by moisture in the air
-
Hair absorbs humidity and swells
-
Controlled with barrier products and technique
Some frizz is normal and healthy, especially with curls.
