SLEEPING WITH CURLY HAIR

Protect your curls overnight without overthinking it

How you sleep with your curls matters — but there’s no single “right” way to do it. The goal of a nighttime routine is to reduce friction, prevent excessive tangling, and preserve curl definition, while still fitting your lifestyle.

Your curls will move while you sleep. That’s normal. The goal isn’t perfection — it’s setting yourself up for an easier refresh in the morning.

WHAT HAPPENS TO CURLS OVERNIGHT

When we sleep, our hair experiences:

  • Friction from pillowcases

  • Compression from head position

  • Stretching when hair is pulled up or pinned

Any time curls are pulled upward, they stretch, which can loosen the curl pattern and create some frizz. This doesn’t mean you did anything wrong — it’s simply how curls behave.

SLEEPING WITH WET HAIR (IMPORTANT)

If your hair is wet:

  • Avoid wearing a bonnet

  • Avoid tight coverings

  • Allow airflow so hair can dry

Trapping wet hair can lead to:

  • Frizz

  • Flattened curls

  • Scalp issues

I personally prefer to refresh in the morning, not at night — unless your schedule truly works better that way.

FABRICS MATTER (A LOT)

One of the easiest ways to protect your curls overnight is by reducing friction.

Cotton Pillowcases

  • Absorb moisture from your hair

  • Create friction and static

  • Can cause frizz, tangles, and dryness

Satin vs. Silk

Both are great options — here’s the difference:

  • Satin

    • Smooth weave (usually polyester)

    • Budget-friendly

    • Reduces friction and moisture loss

  • Silk

    • Natural fiber

    • Breathable and temperature-regulating

    • Retains moisture very well

Neither is “better” — the best option is the one you’ll actually use consistently.

BONNETS, SCRUNCHIES & PILLOWCASES

You have options — choose what works for you.

  • Silk or satin pillowcase

    • Great if you don’t like wearing anything on your head

  • Silk or satin bonnet

    • Look for a tie bonnet, not elastic

    • Elastic bonnets can create pressure and tension

  • Satin scrunchie + pineapple

    • A loose option that works well for many curl types

Remember: pulling curls up = stretching. Stretching can loosen curls and create some frizz, but that’s okay — it’s part of curl life and easily refreshed.

PRODUCTS AT NIGHT

For most curl routines:

  • No product is needed at night

Adding product before bed can:

  • Weigh curls down

  • Cause buildup

  • Make refreshing harder the next day

Let your curls rest. We’ll do the work in the morning.

A FLEXIBLE MINDSET

Sleeping routines are personal. What works for one curl pattern or lifestyle may not work for another.

Your goal overnight:

  • Reduce friction

  • Minimize tangles

  • Make refreshing easier

Not to wake up with perfect curls.
